ON THE MALAGA BEAT
Burglary offences in Malaga continue to be an issue of some
concern to your local Police. In 2006/2007 a total of 308 Burglaries
were committed in the Ballajura Police District, which incorporates
Ballajura, Malaga and Cullacabardee. Of these 195 or 63% were
committed in Malaga. The majority of these were “smash
and grab” type offences where offenders have smashed a
window to the premises and grabbed smaller items such as laptop
computers and the like. It’s important that business make
it as difficult as possible for these offences to be committed
or at least make it as easy as possible for the offenders to
be detected. One way is by installing CCTV within the premises.
There are a large range of systems available that offer a great
deal of evidentiary value to any police investigation. I would
certainly encourage you to target harden your business premises
as much as possible.
You will all know by now that the Malaga Crime Management Forum
recently received a federal prevention grant worth over $100,
000 to implement a variety of crime prevention initiatives in
the area. All partners in this forum including Police are working
extremely hard to get this project up and running. Hopefully
we will be able to show some good results in the near future.
One of the initiatives was to purchase engraving equipment which
is now on hand at the Malaga Business Association. We would encourage
all businesses to make use of this equipment and engrave all
items of value with your ABN number. This simple action makes
tracing the owner of stolen property a much easier task. It also
provides a warning signal to second hand dealers that property
hocked may be stolen and provides Police with a far better opportunity
to catch offenders.
Engravers may be borrowed FREE by contacting the Malaga & Districts
Business Association.
